Protecting Haiti's Children

March 15, 2024 E-Newsletter

We are so grateful for your continued generosity and support this past week as we reached out to you about a child protection crisis that is unfolding in Haiti. THANK YOU! Because of your support, we were able to provide urgent, critical care for more than 50 children, rescuing them from dire circumstances and helping to reunite more than 30 of them with their families. In addition, we are able to provide safe, temporary housing, food and other critical care for the remaining children. Based on the current state of Haiti, we expect many more orphanages to close in the coming months, putting thousands of children at great risk.

We’re also grateful for those who joined us for our Zoom Q&A session this past Monday evening. We shared updates on our work in southern Haiti, protecting children, families, and communities. Your interest and support are greatly appreciated. Please continue to keep those we serve in your thoughts and prayers for their safety and for peace in Haiti.

At Overture, we love this time of year! We get to report on the amazing progress and impact taking place in Haiti. And it's all because of your support, the hard work of our teams and communities and through the grace and provision of God!

Over the next few emails, we are going to highlight each of our major milestones from the report and share more about how these milestones will impact our work this year. In this email we’re excited to share about our partnership with IBESR (Haiti’s child welfare agency).

As we work to more effectively serve our friends in southern Haiti, partnerships are a critical part of producing the best possible outcomes. That’s why we’ve entered into a partnership with IBESR to create a stronger child protection system in the communities we serve.

By providing vital resources and support, we empower IBESR to be the leading force in safeguarding children's rights. Together, we can amplify the impact of our work and make a lasting difference in the lives of children, their families and communities.

Our initiatives for this important partnership include:

  • Demonstrating a model for NGOs to work as partners and facilitators of IBESR’s goals.

  • Supporting IBESR in the development of goals and the coordination of other child protection partners in our area in their commitments to meeting IBESR’s goals.

  • Supporting the progress of major reforms in the child protection and welfare field, including developing a functioning foster care system, improving data collection and case management, and advocating for orphanage closures.

  • Leading the way in developing training and education programs for community leaders and members around child protection and welfare and their responsibilities to respect and support IBESR and other agencies of authority.

These are aggressive goals that will take considerable effort and investment to achieve. We’re already seeing promising results from the partnership as we have worked together to:

  • reunite 48 children with their biological families,

  • place 18 children with qualified foster families since January,

  • rescued and provided care to more than 50 children in an orphanage crisis,

  • and have assessed 12 foster families willing to care for special needs children.

We will continue to keep you informed about our progress, impact and outcomes and how you can be a part of making this critical partnership a success. Please reach out to us with any questions and/or suggestions you may have - lisa@ooihaiti.com

You can read more about our work with IBESR to build a strong and thriving foster care system in our recent blog post. Please look for more emails focusing on the milestones from our annual report in the coming month!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
