CARING FOR CHILDREN WITH COMPLEX NEEDS

Every child belongs in a

family.  Some families need more support.

Disability, chronic illness, and the effects of trauma will shape the support a child needs. They do not diminish a child’s dignity or need for belonging.

Understanding each child.

Some children need help managing ongoing health conditions or disabilities. Others carry emotional wounds from abuse, abandonment, or institutional care. These experiences can overlap. Our Haitian social workers listen to children, their families, and caregivers, recognize their strengths, and assess the support needed for daily life, learning, relationships, and well-being.

Guided by our Christian faith, Overture helps families provide safe, loving care through individualized plans and continued support.

Care that continues at home.

A loving family is an essential beginning. Children and caregivers may also need dependable professional guidance and practical resources. Depending on assessed needs and available resources, support can include social work and counseling, access to healthcare and medications, nutrition, education, clothing, transportation, and other assistance.  We coordinate with IBESR, Haiti’s child protection authority, families, and relevant service providers.

Our work supports biological and foster families, with particular attention to preparing and sustaining foster placements for children who cannot safely return to relatives.

Standing beside caregivers.

Caregivers of children with special needs, whether they are the biological family or a foster family, should have people to turn to as they learn about a child’s needs and respond to challenges. Through home visits, counseling, practical guidance, and encouragement, our team helps families build confidence and access appropriate support. Preparing caregivers and continuing that relationship help make family care more sustainable.

Staying as needs change.

Our promise does not end when a child goes home. Social workers continue monitoring safety and wellbeing, reviewing care plans, and responding as circumstances change. For children who have experienced trauma, trust may grow gradually through consistent relationships and everyday experiences of care.
