Madan Sanon is in the Commune of Saint Louis du Sud (in Sud Department of Haiti). The families in this community are extremely vulnerable because they lack the infrastructure and resources necessary to provide for their daily basic needs. When implementing the community meal program, one of the parents said to our social workers: “This is the first time that an organization has come to the area to help us. I send a big thank you to the people who allowed this community to benefit from this meal program. I hope that we continue with this program in the area."

More findings from our community assessment can be found below.

Our social workers are supporting community leaders as they identify the long term goals for their community.  Implementation of our model of social support will increase the community's capacity to strengthen families.  We are confident that this will result in families being better prepared to survive and quickly recover from the next unexpected disaster or even that puts them at risk.

Most importantly, our social support model serves as the building blocks to share our faith, hope and love of Christ in Haiti.

Social workers conducted a community assessment together with the community leaders of Madan Sanon. Here are some of their findings:

Social Issues

Many of the parents in this area have relinquished one or more of their children to orphanages because they cannot provide for their basic needs. Therefore, these children are at risk for developmental issues, abuse or trafficking, Cases of violence tend to increase when there are natural disasters or country-wide crisis such as the political insecurity. Generational poverty, lack of education and social support all contribute to the vulnerability of children in this area.

Education

The community does not have enough schools to provide education for all the school-aged children in the community.  To access a school, children must travel outside of their community to other schools in the Commune.  Sometimes this means traveling several miles by foot.  In addition, most children cannot attend school because their parents are not able to cover tuition or materials.

Nutrition

The primary means of income for families is from fishing and farming. Families are at a disadvantage for nutrition because the fish and crops do not produce enough to feed everyone or yield income to provide for other daily basic needs.

Housing

The housing situation in Madan Sanon was already critical when the earthquake stuck this community on August 14, 2021.  More than 200 homes were destroyed.

Healthcare

The community of Madan Sanon lacks both the infrastructure and healthcare professionals to provide medical care and public health education to the families.  The nearest clinic is several miles away and is not free.
